GTA Publisher CEO: AI is just a “magic trick”
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of GTA 6 developer, described artificial intelligence in his recent remarks as “a combination of data with an entertaining magic trick” and said that this technology can never be creative. He believes that AI is great for business, but it will not replace human creativity.
Zelnick said in his new interview:
AI is a contradictory term, there is no such thing. Machine learning… machines don’t learn anything. These are convenient ways to explain something that seems like magic to humans. In reality, these are digital tools, and we have always used digital tools.
The CEO of Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K Games, believes that AI helps businesses be more efficient and improves the quality of work, but it will not lead to job losses. He continued:
On the contrary, the history of digital technology shows that technology increases employment, productivity, and GDP, and I think that’s what will happen with AI.

Zelnick, referring to the point that AI models operate based on existing data and are naturally “retrospective,” while major successes in the entertainment industry have always been “forward-looking,” spoke about the necessity of “safeguards” for AI to prevent infringement of others’ intellectual property. Zelnick emphasized that his company is aware of this issue and will use technologies that respect others’ intellectual property and allow them to protect their own intellectual property.
Zelnick had previously expressed similar views. He had said in the past that “genius belongs to humans” and AI tools cannot replace it. According to him, great successes stem from human genius, and “data sets plus computations and large models do not equal human genius.”
Fortunately, Zelnick’s words can be encouraging for those who have been concerned about Rockstar’s uncontrolled use of AI in the development process of GTA 6.
