Rockstar Founder Explains the Popularity of GTA Series Games
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, attributes the enduring popularity of the GTA series to patience, reinvention, and the distinctiveness of each game.
When it comes to the most influential franchises in video game history, the GTA series consistently ranks at the top. But what keeps this name fresh and exciting after several decades? According to Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, it’s not just about the chaos and crime in these games; it comes down to patience.
In a new episode of the Lex Fridman podcast, Houser explained why the GTA series continues to captivate players worldwide. A large part of this appeal stems from the fact that Rockstar doesn’t release a new title in the series every year.
He emphasized that while each GTA game remains a crime game at its core, its execution and gameplay change to create a fresh feeling. According to him, the series has evolved in such a way that people are genuinely eager to play it.
Regarding a question about the high excitement for GTA game releases, Houser stated that this is due to Rockstar’s patience and not rushing things. He says the long wait between each game is part of what keeps the series special.
He said about this:
These games aren’t released regularly, and I think we’ve succeeded in continuously innovating this IP. These games always felt different, and people have different feelings about them because they truly are different.
A GTA series game is about crime, but how that game plays changes. I think the way the IP evolved made people eager to play them.
Of course, we did a good job marketing these games. We tried to market them in a way that felt like marketing for classic movies. In fact, the feeling was conveyed that you were inside that product because you had seen the trailers and showcases.
GTA 6 is scheduled to be released on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
